Mindfully training yourself for self-compassion
Profs. Neff and Germer from the Harvard Medical School in Boston developed a “Mindful Self-Compassion training technique“.
The clinical trials were very promising.
Within the program are various meditations, like “loving-kindness meditation,” “affectionate breathing,” “self-compassionate letter writing,” etc.
These practices have proved to help participants develop a habit of self-compassion or self-love.
According to the researchers, “Self-compassion knows that you need to be kind to yourself during suffering, and change will come.”
Mindfulness knows that you need to be spacious in facing suffering.
If you are sceptical about the benefits of practising mindfulness, remember they are backed up by research.
The stress hormone cortisol is reduced by these mindful exercises in self-compassion as your body’s physiological capacity to reduce stress.
Researchers found that practising these techniques every day for 40 minutes for eight weeks increased participants’ levels of self-compassion by 43 per cent.
